Actinic Keratosis and how to prevent it

Actinic keratosis and keratosis refer to the same thing. It is a skin complication which can develop on any other part of the body. Due to its relation to the suns exposure, it is common on the head and neck areas. Hands and arms are also affected. During its early stages, it develops as a reddish spot which appears rough in both appearance and feel.

They can resolve themselves, but there are other cases where they can grow to become larger. They can be wider, darker and can sometimes irritate and itch with a burning sensation. They become more uncomfortable when in areas where clothing can rub against them or along the hairline.

In some medical research, they can be termed as precancerous and lesions which can end up developing to chancer.

Actinic keratosis is slow growth and can be monitored over a long period. If through the observation it is determined that treatment is necessary, there are several procedures which can be applied. Among common techniques which can be applied is cryotheraphy. It is a technique which freezes the growths without cutting them off. There are also prescription medications which can destroy the actinic keratosis too.

If they develop on your ear, you can consult an ear doctor who can determine whether you can have surgical operation to remove them. There are different techniques involved in the surgical treatment. Common techniques which can be applied include curettage or shave excision. It is a simple and superficial way to remove the lesions from the skin. Minor capillary bleeding can occur but electro cautery can be applied to stop them. Some experts can as well apply simple excision to treat the complication.

There are several; guideline you can follow to prevent the information of keratosis. First, you should develop a habit of staying out of the sun during peak hours of between 10 a.m. and p.m. If you can’t stay out of the sun when the rays are the strongest, then you need to wear protective clothing. You can as well use a broad spectrum of sunscreen which blocks both UVB and UVA radiation.

The techniques should be applied all year round. Some people mistake the sun during fall or winter to be less harmful. But the fact is that the sun is dangerous all year round. You should as well protect your eyes because they are made out of tissues similar to the skin.

You should make a habit of doing as self-examination of yourself and note any development of cancerous tissues or unusual skin lesions. If there is any concern, you should let your doctor know immediately.
